Man faces murder charge after bystander dies in police chase

SEDALIA, Mo. (AP) — A central Missouri man who led law enforcement on a chase that ended with a man being killed has been charged with second-degree murder and three other felonies.

Westley Reid, 26, of Clinton, was also charged Tuesday with driving while intoxicated leading to a death, first-degree tampering with a motor vehicle and resisting arrest, KRCG-TV reported.

The Missouri State Highway Patrol said the chase began Sunday night in Pettis County when officers tried to stop Reid for driving a stolen vehicle.

The pursuit went into Pettis County. Reid ran a stop sign in Sedalia, crashed into a Pettis County deputy’s vehicle and then hit a pickup driven by Zachary Hancock Bottom, of Sedalia, the patrol said.

Bottom was thrown from the vehicle and died from his injuries at a hospital.

The deputy was not injured. Reid suffered minor injuries.
