Hawthorne police officer shot, wounded; suspect arrested

By: Josh Cain, Los Angeles Daily News

A parking lot shootout between Hawthorne police officers and a gunman clad in military fatigues left both the man and one of the officers with gunshot wounds Sunday morning, law enforcement officials said.

Hawthorne Police Chief Michael Ishii described the officers’ running gun battle with a man “armed with some sort of assault rifle, or TEC-9 type, high-powered or high-capacity weapon,” as he fled through cars parked at a shopping center southwest of the intersection of Rosecrans Avenue and Aviation Boulevard.

At around 9:20 a.m., officers responded to a call about a man with a handgun chasing a woman in the lobby and parking lot of a Marriott hotel on the southeast side of the intersection.
