Illinois State Trooper shot after chase

MACOUPIN COUNTY, Ill. (WAND) – A shootout following a police chase has left an officer injured in Macoupin County.

This shooting took place in the area of the Sam’s Club in Glen Carbon where shots were fired by the Billy L. Walker Jr., a 53 year old male of Hillsboro, Missouri. Illinois State police say a trooper gave pursuit starting in Glen Carbon around 3:45 P.M.. The chase led the officer and suspect into Staunton, where the suspect crashed into the median and fled on foot.

The officer and suspect exchanged gunfire and the officer was shot in the hand. Walker was also shot. He later died from his injuries. The Walker had no identification on his person and remains unidentified at this time.  A handgun was recovered at the scene of the shooting.
