17 cops in N.J. town say they were harassed by bosses over military deployments, service

Seventeen Clifton police officers who also serve in the military say they have been repeatedly harassed and bullied by their bosses over the time commitment associated with their service.

The officers received letters in November ordering them to produce seven years of military pay stubs to prove they were actually deployed overseas, their attorney Catherine Elston said Friday morning. That is just part of a pattern of discrimination against the military members and they intend to sue the department, Elston said.

“Several of these officers have bronze stars, one (has been awarded) a Purple Heart – these are people that take their jobs in the military and in Clifton very seriously and they feel they should be able to choose to defend the country and serve their community and not be harassed about it,” Elston said. “They feel like they have a target on their backs.”
