From fatal shooting, to 170 mile police chase, to a standoff: Night ends with suspect in custody and law enforcement community in mourning

A line of red and blue lights, stretching more than three miles, covering the roadways Thursday evening in Rockford to honor one of their own, who made the ultimate sacrifice today. That procession started at the hospital, winding its way to the Coroner.

McHenry County Sheriff’s Deputy Jacob Keltner was killed Thursday morning. He was part of a fugitive task force trying to arrest a wanted man, with suspected crimes in Central Illinois. Keltner was married with two young children. He’d been with the Sheriff’s Office in the northwest Chicago suburbs for nearly 13 years.

“He was part of a group of officers that chase the worst of the worst. And unfortunately, sometimes when when people are willing to take on these responsibilities, this is an unfortunate end,” shared a somber McHenry County Sheriff, Bill Prim.
