NEW BUFFALO — An Illinois man is in the Berrien County jail after police say he led them on a pursuit in a stolen vehicle through parts of two states, then fled on foot.

Police eventually found the man hiding after he crashed the vehicle into a sign post in front of McDonald’s on M-239 near I-94 in New Buffalo Township, police said.

Berrien County Undersheriff Chuck Heit identified the man as Mark Jenkins, 33, of Blue Island, Ill. He was jailed on charges of failure to stop and identify himself at a motor vehicle accident, driving with no operator’s license, possession of marijuana and possession of stolen property.
