Heidelberg is MPD’s first fallen officer since 1961

Officer Nathan Heidelberg became the first Midland Police Department officer to die in the line of duty in more than 58 years, according to the website Officer Down Memorial Page.

Heidelburg was shot Tuesday morning and later died from his injuries. According to the website, the last MPD officer to die in the line of duty was Lt. Gordon Smith Jr. on Nov. 28, 1961. The cause listed was gunfire.

Overall, the website shows two other MPD officers died in the line of duty. They are Officer Bryan Scoggins on April 14, 1961 (a motorcycle crash) and Officer John Perry Wyrick on Nov. 10, 1935 (gunfire).
