WELLESLEY, Mass. — A Wellesley police officer is on the mend and the man accused of dragging him with an allegedly stolen car Saturday is being held without bail on serious assault charges.

Theodore Newton, arrested by state police early Sunday morning, is expected to appear in Dedham District Court Monday on charges that he dragged a Wellesley police officer from a vehicle reported stolen out of Delaware while the officer was attempting to arrest him during a traffic stop on Route 9 east early Saturday night.

Newton was located by state police at 12:50 a.m. Sunday on Route 84 west. Police said Newton was seated in the back seat of a 2019 Kia Optima and asked why the vehicle had been stopped. Police said Newton stated he did not have identification and gave his name as Brendan Newton.
