By: Eric Obernauer, njherald.com

NEWTON — A Newton police officer was forced to abort his pursuit of a motorist on Spring Street Thursday afternoon when the officer lost control of his patrol car and fishtailed in the opposite direction before crashing into another vehicle.

The accident, which was blamed on a slippery road surface caused by leftover road salt and gravel from the night before, occurred by the intersection of Spring Street and Sparta Avenue, shortly after 3 p.m.

No injuries were reported, according to Newton Police Chief Michael Richards.
