Hamden revising its police pursuit policy after fatal crashes

HAMDEN — The town’s acting police chief and mayor are recommending a change to the police department’s vehicle pursuit policy.

Acting Chief John Cappiello and Mayor Curt B. Leng have proposed changes to the policy that governs how police handle vehicle pursuits.

“Over the course of the last couple years, there have been pursuits in Hamden and other communities and it’s essential for us to make sure that when these pursuits happen, they’re happening only for absolutely needed reasons,” Leng said. “It’s proven across the board that pursuits cause risk for the person in car being chased, the person pursuing and for those on the road.”
